New Video Blog Map

As some of you know, I took the past few months off from the development of VlogMap to relaunch Ridertech.com, an action sports community with maps, videos, photos, forums, mobile and more.

How does this relate to VlogMap?
I just updated the old VlogMap map with some new tricks.

Hope you enjoy.

VlogMap Turns One

There have been a lot of first-birthdays this summer, but what can we say? Video blogging was new and sexy in the summer of 2005.

VlogMap launched one year ago today and is proud to have been a part of this past year's craziness. The community map has spread from a few vlogs to over 1,000 geographically-located video blogs.

Here's to another year of mapping, video, and social networks.

Maybe this year we can finally get rid of the browser's back and next buttons.

Isn't it about time we

Regional Feeds and Geocoding

I'm back in Seattle with a rejuvenated spirit to further develop VlogMap after an inspiring week at Vloggercon, Google's Geo Developer Day and O'Reilly's Where 2.0 Conference.

Although time has been limited, there are so many plans to continue converging Internet video, mapping and social networks. Here are the two most recent steps...

Article in the San Francisco Chronicle

The San Francisco Chronicle

VlogMap was one of the video blog resources listed in a recent article printed on May 1st, 2006 in the The San Francisco Chronicle. The article provides a good background into what vloggers are doing, but the highlight of the story is why people are vlogging.

Audio Interview with Matt

I just got done with a phone interview by Bre Pettis of WeAreTheMedia.com.

Bre is a fellow Seattle vlogger and was one of the first people I met through building this site. Matter of fact, many of us met for the first time at Seattle Meet the Vloggers event last summer. Since then, Bre, Peter and I try to meet up regularly to discuss video blogging ideas over beers.

After getting the scope, Bre surprised me by calling and recording our converstion. Getting caught off guard helps make for a good interview (even if not everything I say makes sense).

Listen to the call.

VlogMap in Wired Magazine

Wired Magazine's Guide to the Online Video Universe

The May 2006 issue of Wired Magazine features The Ultimate Guide to the Online Video Universe.

After an intro page and "The Big Picture" chart, VlogMap.org is listed as one of The New Networks along side FireANT, Google Video, iTunes, YouTube and more.

IEEE Spectrum: Welcome to the Vlogosphere

VlogMap was reference in the April 2006 issue of IEEE Spectrum magazine, the flagship publication for the world's largest professional technology association.

"From digital cameras to peer-to-peer distribution software, new technologies make it easy to find, swap, and make video on the Web. Is this a good thing?"

Clustering Markers

With new vlogs being mapped everyday, the growing pains have become severe. Many of you have probably noticed the map has been getting slower and crashing IE for months (Get Firefox!).

In order to combat this growth and ensure the maps scale for the future, I've implemented a clustering script that reduces the number of markers when the map is zoomed out. Clicking on one of these clustered markers will display the first few vlog names, and also the number of vlogs within that particular cluster. As you zoom into an area, the real marker locations begin to appear. All markers should be visible once the map is zoomed into level 12, however this number is affected by growth and density. The script also hides and shows markers as you move around the map, which greatly improves the responsiveness.

VlogMap in MySpace

VlogMap now has a profile in MySpace. If you're a vlogger with a MySpace account, please head over and add VlogMap to your list of friends.
